Capital Region National Day of Prayer
History and Themes

NDP ORIGIN

1775 - The first Continental Congress called for a National Day of Prayer.

1863 - Abraham Lincoln called for such a day.

1952 - Congress established NDP as an annual event by a joint resolution, signed into law by President Truman.

1988 - The law was amended and signed by President Reagan, designating the NDP as the first Thursday in May.

CAPITAL REGION NDP HISTORY

1984 - Gathered leaders and the Body of Christ for the Capital Region National Day of Prayer first corporate observance.

1985 - Local and National leaders established The Capital Region National Day of Prayer (CRNDP) Coalition Christian Host Committee for the National Day of Prayer. Dr. Corinthia Ridgley Boone was unanimously electing as the chairperson of CRNDP.

1986 - NDP Sunrise Services held at six churches in the Greater Washington area.

1987 - A communications network among Christian leaders locally, nationally and internationally was put into place.  Together in Ministry International (TIM) evolved at the request of pastors and leaders.

1988 - Congress set a permanent date for NDP...First Thursday in every May.

1989 - CRNDP Observance at National Cathedral. A spirit of cooperation and participation from the diverse Christian community was released that continues.

1990 - Observance on the West Capitol Steps began in 1990 and remains the venue of choice along with the Bible Marathon preceding the NDP Observance. Joint resolution of Congress passed commemorating 1990 as International Year of Bible Reading.

1991 - Prayer Works - Empowerment to do ministry.

1992 - Let Us Pray - Empowered in Unity

1993 - United in Prayer- Empowered with authority

1994 - Heal Our Land - 2 Chronicles 7:14: Empowering our youth to arise and use their gifts to strengthen America.

1995 - Seek His Face - Jeremiah 29:11-13: Bringing together the many membered Body in prayer commitment.

1996 - Honor God - 1 Samuel 2:30-31,35: Model the life of Christ with His healing power of Love.

1997 - In God We Trust - Psalm 20:7: To make us one. In spirit - In commitment - In Vision - In Ministry.

1998 - America. Return to God - Joel 2: 12-13: Model fostering reconciliation in every place by every means possible.

1999 - Light the Nation with Prayer - Matthew 5:14-15: Witnessed the greatest diversity of the Body of Christ in worship, prayer and fellowship.

2000 - Prayer 2K, Americas Hope for the New Millennium - Romans 12:12: Enlarging - lengthening and strengthening our stakes (Isaiah 54:2).

2001 - One nation under God - Psalm 33:12: Let us never abandon the vision of unity.

2002 - America United under God- Psalm 46:7

2003 - Righteousness Exalts a Nation - Proverbs 14:34

2004 - Let Freedom Ring

2005 - God shed His grace on thee!

2006 - America, Honor God! - 1 Samuel 2:30b

2007 - America, Unite in Prayer!

2008 - Prayer, America's Strength & Shield - Psalm 28:7

2009 - Prayer, America's Hope - Psalm 33:22

2010 - Prayer for Such a Time as This - Nahum 1:7

2011 - A Mighty Fortress Is Our God - Psalm 91:2

2012 - One Nation Under God - Psalm 33:12

2013 - Pray For America - Matthew 12:21

2014 - One Voice United in Prayer - Romans 15:6
